The Civil Rights act of our time

The Civil Rights act of our time

Why does Michigan need a Breathe Act?

The idea that safety results from violence is one that has proven false over centuries. The Michigan BREATHE Act is the human and civil rights legislation that Michigan deserves. Michigan deserves clean water, safe neighborhoods, living wages, high quality schools and health care that truly cares.

The Michigan BREATHE Act is...

01

Repair the harm to individuals and communities

The Michigan BREATHE Act recognizes the history of racial violence, it’s roots in systems and creates a process for accountability and healing.

02

Rebuild REAL public safety with community at the center

The Michigan BREATHE Act is legislation, created with the people for the people, to address root causes of violence and crime (resources, access and trauma) and protect those who need care in crisis with real public safety that values life.

03

Reclaim public systems to produce just and equitable results

The Michigan BREATHE Act creates new policies across law, education, health, environment, and the economy that reduce harm, provides support and care, creating opportunity for all.

04

Reimagine what keeps communities safe

The Michigan BREATHE Act raises a standard for criminal and juvenile justice to go beyond basic reform to life affirming transformation to ensure that resources are allocated where they are most needed.

In 2020, Ingham County Board of Commissioners responded to our call to action by passing a resolution declaring racism a public health pandemic.
